I’ve always loved organization and design. Designing things to be aesthetically pleasing and functional whether it be a vision board, a project plan, a room, or information – organization and design are certainly on the list of things that bring me joy.
So my introduction to web design at an early age teaching web design to kids through my mother’s non-profit was right up my alley. Even though I didn’t know it at the time.
When my mother started NC Connected, I was her protégé. To say I wasn’t thrilled about it would be an understatement but, I got onboard. (Thanks mom 🙂 )
Several valuable lessons came from my work as a web design trainer –
- I learned to organize information into training lessons. – A skill I’ve used in every role since then.
- I identified the key factors to successfully train someone on ANY subject – INVALUABLE
- I discovered that I could do anything that I put my mind to. – The world is your oyster!
- I realized organization and design were at the center of it all and that I was naturally good at both. – Light bulb moment!
This sparked my curiosity and made me dig deeper.
So I took the skills I learned teaching and created my own web design business at the age of 14 because – Why not, right? For 10 years I developed websites for small businesses across NC and loved it. Well, part of it. I loved the – you guessed it – design and organization piece. The client constraints on the design and requirements, not so much. I learned that being a web designer long-term wasn’t for me but, as a web designer I had my first experience managing multiple clients. Essentially, each client’s website was a project which was my introduction to the world of project management.
My curiosity around project management continued to grow and I began seriously looking into the project management profession. At first, it boggled my brain that there was a whole field to do the things that came naturally to me. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that organization and design in the realm of project management is my thing. This has been proven in every aspect of my life. Overall, I find that like in organizing – everyone and everything has its place.
I’ve since found my place as a project management professional and have enjoyed a number of project management roles over the years. Daily I continue working to further my project management career, further my knowledge, and to consistently bring value to each and every team I have the pleasure of working with.
If you’re looking for someone who can think outside of the box, who is a master manager of details (but can also manage the big picture), and who can collaborate with your team to successfully manage your projects, then we might be a good match.
